Get in the Game DIY
When hunting alone, it’s hard to take great photos of you and your trophy game in the field. When hunting with a partner, capturing the memory of both of you with the prize harvest is always something to cherish.
Here’s an easy way to build a homemade, go-anywhere digital camera mount:
- Drill two ¼-inch holes into the center line of a jumbo binder clip (size #10), commonly found at office supply stores. Using an Allen wrench, fasten a 5⁄8-inch No. 20 hex bolt through either hole with a self-locking nut. Don’t fasten the nut too tight, you’ll want the bolt to be able to tightly spin inside the clip, so you can adjust it later. The second hole in the clip is used to stabilize an arrow or sharpened stick, when used as a make-shift monopod.
- To test your camera clip, screw it into your camera’s tripod socket. Use an open-end wrench to spin, adjust and set the camera to be horizontal to the clip. Every camera’s tripod socket is a little different, that’s why you need the ability to tweak each camera’s position with the wrench for a perfectly perpendicular fit.
- Once in the field, pinch the handles of the clip to attach it to an anchor object and flip the handles down and out of the way. You can anchor your camera clip to almost any thing — a tree branch, tree stand step, a fence, an arrow, or a sharpened stick stuck in the ground.
- Next, secure the camera onto the clip. You can twist the mount up or down, right or left when it’s clipped to position the camera in the correct direction for your photo.
