Thanksgiving — the ultimate teachable turkey moment

There’s no better time than Thanksgiving to teach folks about turkeys — the king of all game birds and the greatest conservation success story of all time.

Whether you teach in a classroom, at a nature center or state park, or for a youth program, students of all ages are sure to have turkey on their minds. And it’s our job to get them thinking beyond Butterball.

As conservation educators the holiday sets the stage for teaching about wildlife conservation principles, forestry facts and natural resource management through a fun and relevant theme — the wild turkey. And the NWTF has the resources (including some of the best volunteers in the country) to spread the message.

"It’s our job to get
them thinking
beyond Butterball."

Each year, NWTF volunteers give wild turkey presentations and donate Wild About Turkey Education Boxes to classrooms and educational settings in their communities. In some cases, it’s the first association young impressionable minds have with hunting and of hunters. These presentations and lessons also tend to become annual traditions in many lucky schools.

Students of all ages, and educators alike, appreciate these “out of the box” lessons all year long, but they especially gobble them up around Turkey Day!— Christine

FYI > The NWTF has distributed more than 30,000 Wild About Turkey Education Boxes since the program began in 1999.
