Out of the Box Education

What’s in a Wild About Turkey Education Box? What every a youngster (or the curious young-at-heart) would ever want to know about America’s greatest game bird. But it goes way beyond cool facts and snazzy displays, the enclosed materials are full-fledged lessons and ready-to-go teaching tools — a smorgasbord of learning with the wild turkey as the centerpiece.

Making Tracks Transfer Box — The materials come in a scaled replica of the box used by state and federal wildlife agencies to transport turkeys from one habitat to another for repopulation purposes.

K-12 Curriculum and Activity Guide — Includes information on wild turkeys, as well as multi-curriculum lesson plans developed by teachers for teachers. More than 25 lessons place emphasis on math, science, history, English, creative writing, art, technology and design, and habitat management. Lesson plans are correlated to the National Teaching Standards. Find a direct link to those standards at www.turkeycountrymagazine.com.

A multi-media CD-ROM And DVD has three fun, entertaining videos on wild turkey vocabulary, the importance of wildlife habitat management, and the successful comeback of the wild turkey from the brink of extinction. Also includes printable handouts, activities, and audio tracks to add to the learning experience. There’s a Know Your Wild Turkey Tom poster, too.

Return of the Wild Turkey Bulletin Board — Wild turkey facts and images ready to assemble

Bookmarks, Pencils and Rulers — The box comes with 30 of each to pass out to students. Refills are available through Turkey Shoppe at www.nwtf.org.

Making Tracks Poster — Illustrates wild turkey habitat requirements and how biologists, foresters and wildlife enthusiasts manage areas for prime turkey land. It also shows various turkey signs one might find in the woods.
