Don’t poke ‘em in the behind — Look ‘em in the eye

After a hunter downs a deer they sometimes will walk up to the animal and poke it in the behind. These animals may only be stunned or unconscious, and a sharp jab to the rear could cause them to jump and run off.

A better way is to approach the animal from the front. If the eyes are shut — shoot it again. Make sure the eyes are open and dry. The tongue should be sticking out and the stomach will not be moving.

Benny, thanks for the great advice. If I had read your letter sooner, I would have done a better job of recovering that trophy 10-point this season. When I can eat solid food again and walk without significant pain, I’ll make sure to send you a prize from our Readers’ Tips closet. — P.J. Perea, Turkey Country Senior Editor
